More than 50 UN representatives met with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Saturday. During the meeting, Al-Sisi stressed on Egypt's interest in working with the UN in order to ensure peace and security in the Middle East, according to state news agency MENA.
He added that the UN's counter terrorism efforts compliment Egypt's efforts in fighting terrorism both in the national and the regional levels.
Meanwhile, in the meeting, a representative of the African delegation in the United Nations (UN) expressed his support to Egypt for having a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
Speaking with Daily News Egypt, Hassan Nafa'a, a political science professor at Cairo University, said: "Egypt has a good chance of getting the seat; it has a good record in the Security Council regardless the current political circumstances."
"However, voting in the UN is a political process that is why Egypt needs to exert more efforts in talking to countries' representatives," he added.
Egypt announced itself a candidate for the seat, as a representative of the African Union, at the beginning of this year. Since then, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been visiting many African countries to acquire their votes.
Egypt was member of the Security Council in 1946, 1949-1950, 1961-1962, 1984-1985, and 1996-1997.
