Three students from the German University in Cairo (GUC) were detained Monday after the university's administration had filed complaints against the students for taking part in a sit-in three months ago. The New Cairo Prosecution issued an order summoning 11 students. Student Union (SU) president Hazem Abdel Khalek, SU Vice President Karim Nagib and student Alaa Al-Attar are to be held in detention for four days, said SU member Ahmed Hesham. Following the death of Yara Tarek, after being run over by a university bus on campus in March, the GUC Student Union announced a sit-in on campus. Tarek was killed when she slipped and fell in the bus waiting area, reportedly when one bus reversed and another one moved forward. The incident left the first-year Faculty of Engineering student with a skull fracture that led to her death. Police had arrived at the scene of the accident after an ambulance had already transferred Tarek to a hospital. The Revolutionary Socialists issued a statement condemning the incident, describing it as being the result of "negligence".
