13.3% unemployment during Q2 2014: CAPMAS

Unemployment in Egypt registered 13.3% during the second quarter (Q2) of 2014, compared to 13.4% during the Q1, the Central Agency of Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced Saturday.
Unemployment recorded 9% during the same quarter in 2010, the statistics agency highlighted.
The CAPMAS report stated that a minimal increase of 0.01% in the work force was witnessed in Q2, where the work force totalled 27.6 million. The total work force has surged by 5.3% since Q2 2010.
The agency's report added that the amount contributed to the economic activities by residents was 47.9%, compared to 48% during Q1 2014.
The number of employees receiving financial compensation amount to 13.7 million, 61% of the work force. CAPMAS also noted that the number of business owners totalled 3.3 million, 13.9% of the work force.
Average weekly working hours was 48.1 hours among men and 43.3 hours among women.
Last week, CAPMAS reported that approximately 27.8% of Egyptian youth live in poverty, while 24.1% live near the poverty line. The figure is a minimal increase compared to last year, where poverty and near-poverty among youth was 51.3%.
