Human rights group receives anonymous threats
Published in Daily News Egypt on 11 - 03 - 2013

The workers for a local human rights group have received numerous threats, according to a statement from El Nadeem Centre for the Psychological Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture.
“Over the past weeks team members of El Nadeem Centre received many unsightly messages and threats across all mediums of notifications, whether the hotline, e-mail, or Facebook messages, both on our private pages and El Nadeem Centre page,” said the organisation on Sunday.
The most recent threat, according to the group, was a video containing sexual content that was sent to one of the employees. The video threatened to “expose" the employee.
The centre said it was working to take steps to identify those sending the threats and will take legal measures once perpetrators are identified.
“These cheap methods will not frighten us and will not make us hesitate for a moment to continue our struggle against all forms of violence, torture, and solidarity with the victims, whether men or women, whom are exposed and subjected to it,” said El Nadeem Centre.
The human rights organisation said the most recent wave of threats was reminiscent of difficulties similar groups in other countries like Tunisia and Palestine face, which include defamation and threats from anonymous sources.
“Women who stand in the front lines facing bullets and cartridges along with fellow revolutionaries and whom organise in groups to protect their peers from harassment in the middle of squares of the revolution will not fear a message here or a video there,” said the statement, “whatever the severity of the language or its filth, whatever horrendous threat.”
