A three-storey building collapsed in Alexandria early on Sunday leading to one dead and four injured. The building, located west of Alexandria in Moharram Bek, collapsed at dawn. The Civil Defence Forces managed to recover a body from under the rubble, while four people were injured in the collapse. Alexandria Governor Mohamed Abbas Atta has announced the end of the rescue operations and added that families of the dead will receive EGP 10,000 and the injured EGP 5,000. He added that a restoration order was issued for the collapsed building but it was not implemented, reported state-owned news agency MENA. Minister of Defence Abdul Fatah Al-Sisi ordered ambulances, fire engines and search and rescue groups to the place of the accident. Prime Minister Hesham Qandil contacted Governor Abbas Atta and demanded an urgent report on the reasons for the collapse, state television reported. Qandil also inquired about the inspection campaign he had ordered earlier to assess the status of different buildings and remove ramshackle structures. This follows a series of illegal buildings collapsing in Alexandria; in July 2012 a building collapsed in Gomrok claiming 20 lives, while in the same week a mother and her two daughters died under the rubble of their home in Al-Amreya district. In January another building collapsed in Maamoura leaving 24 dead and eight injured.
