CAIRO: The Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) announced the launch of its first international campus in Gouna on the Red Sea in Egypt. The new campus, a result of the cultural agreement between Egypt and Germany, will start its academic year on Oct. 1. The TU Berlin Campus Gouna is a non-profit private-public partnership, founded in collaboration with Orascom Hotels and Development. The TU Berlin Campus Gouna will serve as a hub for scientific research in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with a firm commitment to providing regional scientific solutions through specialized postgraduate programs, especially in the field of applied technologies for sustainable development. “We are very grateful for Engineer Samih Sawiris for sharing with us this unique opportunity to be part of Egypt's new history post the revolution,” said Jörg Steinbach, president of TU Berlin. “The timing couldn't be better, as I believe that knowledge transfer is an important factor for any society to improve its innovation potential and promote peace and prosperity. We are thrilled as well as humbled to be part of Egypt's new aspirations to a better future,” added Steinbach. The TU Berlin Campus Gouna will offer Master's of Science degree in three technology majors in areas of prime relevance to Egypt. These include Energy Engineering, Water Engineering, and Urban Development. Each program hosts 30 students per year over four semesters; and faculty professors from TUB will teach all courses in English. Further master programs, including Management and Business Plan Formulation, Logistics, Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship, and Vocational Training are possible options currently under discussion. “As a graduate from TU Berlin, I know how it can enhance the scientific outlook for Egypt. Now is the time to invest in education and apply scientific research to set the stage for true prosperity and secure a much better future for the next generations,” said Sawiris, chairman of Orascom Development Holding. Interested applicants are required to submit copies of their Bachelor of Science certificate with detailed transcripts, in addition to resumes and proof of one year working experience. Fully accredited by the German Higher Education Legislation; the courses at the TU Berlin Campus Gouna have been designed to meet the requirements of the European Education Ministers' 1999 Bologna declaration for the European Higher Education Areas. The TU Berlin Campus in Gouna has been designed by Staab-Architekten German company, and is built on a total land area of 32,746.92 square meters. The campus includes office and laboratory buildings, a main lecture hall, lecture rooms, workshops, an exhibition forum and a cafeteria. The roots of TU Berlin in Germany go back to 1770. A research university located in Berlin, TU Berlin is one of the largest universities of technology and the first to offer doctoral degrees in Germany.
