CAIRO: The Ministry of Higher Education has announced the availability of online access for all Thanaweya Amma (the national general secondary certificate) students to easily register for their desired universities using their examination seat numbers through the government's official website. "Instead of having students applying on paper, the ministry is now allowing students of Thanweya Amma and other national diplomas to do the process online, Mahmoud Alam El Din, the media consultant of the Ministry of Higher Education, told The Daily Star Egypt. Through www.tansik.egypt.gov.eg students are now able to confirm their personal data that has been previously listed on the website, read the necessary information about all the universities and academic institutions in Egypt, decide on a suitable university to enroll in and modify their university priorities list. According to the Akhbar El Youm national newspaper, students can now register their seat numbers on the website which will in turn list them in certain categories automatically, as soon as their Thanaweya Amma grades are announced. "I think it is faster and it will facilitate many things for us. It will save us the effort of going to the government office to apply. But I think it will be a problem for those who don't have computers, said Nayera Ali, a Thanaweya Amma student. Alam El Din said the online registration is considered a step towards fulfilling plans by the Ministry of Education underway since 1999 to turn Egypt into a technology-oriented society. "The field of education can easily help set up a technological society. The aim of this online registration is to offer faster services to students, and allow them the opportunity to get used to using computers and the Internet, said Alam El Din.
