Pre-iftar fight leads to murder by screwdriver
Published in Daily News Egypt on 17 - 10 - 2006

Violence in Boulaq El-Dakrour ends in death
CAIRO: On Ibrahim El-Desouky Street in Giza's Zenin district, a number of boys were playing opposite the auto repair shop of Mahmoud Badr Shaaban.
They were making such a ruckus that Shaaban, 34, shouted at them to quiet down. As they left the area, he got into one of the cars he had been working on to take it for a test drive in the alleyway.
On the other side of the alleyway, Momen Mahmoud Hassan, 32, was giving his mother his deceased father's pension money. As he was driving into the alleyway he came across Shaaban's stalled car, which had managed to block off all the street's entry and exit points.
"Come on, man, we want to get home to enjoy our iftar, Hassan shouted.
But Shaaban wouldn't budge. Instead, he stepped out of his car and he replied, You are not going to pass today. They quarreled and started to exchange blows.
The neighbors interfered and convinced Shaaban to park on the side of the road to give Hassan a chance to pass. The disturbance seemed to be over, but Shaaban felt insulted and could not get over the fact that he had gotten a beating in front of members of his workshop and neighbors.
He decided to take revenge and teach Hassan a lesson. He took an iron pipe, went to Hassan's home and called up to him, Come down if you are a real man. Hassan's mother asked him what he wanted.
He answered aggressively, I want your son because I want to teach him a lesson. She was silent for a while.
Hassan stepped out of the apartment with a screwdriver in his hand and when another fight ensued, he stabbed Shaaban in the head.
Shaaban screamed as he fell to the ground bleeding heavily. He was transferred to Boulak El-Dakrour Hospital, but the doctors decided to transfer him to Kasr El-Aini hospital because he was in very critical condition.
Hassan was arrested and was taken to the Boulak El-Dakrour public prosecutor, Ahmed Hassouna, who listened to his confession in detail, charged him with attempt to commit murder. Hassan was jailed for four days pending a full investigation.
But Shaaban's condition deteriorated rapidly and he died three days later.
Hassan broke down and cried when he was informed that he had killed the car mechanic. I did not mean to kill him, and I was defending my mother because he tried to beat her with an iron pipe, he pleaded with the public prosecutor.
Hassan was later remanded for another 15 days in jail pending the conclusion of the investigation.
As he was being led back to his cell, Hassan asked his guard: What is the difference between attempting to kill and a beating resulting in death?
The guard looked at him and did not answer. Upon agreement with Al-Masry Al-Youm
