Sulfuric acid weapon of choice in week's crimes CAIRO: Anyone who had expected crimes to disappear during the first days of Ramadan will be disappointed. While homicides seem to have slowed down, suicides are on the rise. In a Port Said, a prisoner committed suicide because his family had stopped visiting him. The 48-year-old man hung himself by a rope from the ceiling of the jail because his family hadn't visited him for three months. Al-Mesaa newspaper ran the tragic story of a 22-year-old girl who jumped from a third floor window when a retired civil servant refused to admit their orfy marriage. The girl ran away from her family three months ago to marry the 54-year-old man after falling in love with him. She met her brother by chance and confessed her orfy marriage to the man who is 32 years her senior. But when the brother confronted him, he denied the marriage, claiming that she was his maid. The girl is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit but is in very serious condition. Three vendors in Etay El-Barod used sulphuric acid and other corrosive materials in a quarrel they were having, leaving nine people with extensive burns. In an incident in Imbaba, far removed from the spirit of Ramadan, one man was killed and three severely injured in a fight over a prostitute. A knife fight left three people suffering severe wounds on the first day of Ramadan. No clear reason was identified for the fight but speculation arose that it might have been due to short tempers from fasting. Al-Ahram Al-Mesaey reported a horrible traffic accident that lead to nine deaths and 29 injuries on the highway between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh. Just before iftar, a fire destroyed seven houses in the village of Ibshay. One of the farmers had been burning the remnants of his crops but ended up leaving remnants of seven houses. In Alexandria, police forces arrested a car mechanic who had fled from 150 court judgments carrying 135 years in jail. In the same campaign, 191 others were arrested. Actors Ibrahim Nasr, Wafaa Mekki, Inas Mekki, Hend Akef, Hayatem and the director Mohammed Abdul Nabbi suffered the same poisoning, delaying shooting for an entire day.
