Fashion: In Short
Published in Daily News Egypt on 15 - 04 - 2006

CAIRO: Believe it or not, shorts are the newest addition to a trendy wardrobe. I am not talking about beach shorts or Daizy Dukes; what's "in today are shorts of all lengths that flatter all types of figures and work for almost any occasion.
Last winter every ultra-fashionable woman in Cairo was wearing them, mostly with stockings underneath. Although the look first raised eyebrows, it is catching on globally like any craze does. Who ever said fashion was reasonable?
Now that spring is blooming and summer is just around the corner, it looks like this item is still hot. Although the fabrics have changed from wool to cotton, and the colors from dark plats to pastels, shorts are keeping it up in the crazy world of fashion.
Many varied cuts are on the shelves these days. Bellow the knee to mid thigh shorts are on every runway across the globe and are even spotted in local défilés. The key element for choosing a pair for you is not to get them too tight; even a size bigger than yours isn t less gratifying, as the look this year is flirty, not seductive.
Actually, the concept of shorts is not so crazy, once you get used to the idea. In a country like Egypt were the summer heat is almost painful, it is actually a great idea for morning occasions or even for work. Of course, I highly recommended sticking to Bermudas; they are quite refined. And if you plan to stroll around the city anything above the knee may get you into some trouble.
The night scene, however, is a different story. Micro-shorts are becoming common attire, so if you've got the legs and the guts, go ahead. Show it off.
Now you're wondering how to mix these shorts with the rest of your closet. Well generally you don't want to go with anything too boyish, as shorts already have masculine connotations.
Always mix your shorts with chiffon or lacey tops; maybe add a cinched-in belt.
High heels always add an elegant touch. You could get away with wearing flats if you must, as long as they are sequined and chic, or else you fall back into the masculine trap which is contrary to today's fashion. Still, four-inch heels, court shoes, wedges or even sandals are a more stylish match.
Shorts Do's and Don'ts
Do go out and get a pair, there is a perfect style for each body.Do glam it up for evening with a sparkly scarf, funky belt or hip shoes.Do wear it with a blazer to work. Of course, go for Bermudas in this situation.
Don't wear shorts with a skimpy top as you're already showing off your legs.Don't wear them too short if you cannot pull it off.Don't wear anything too extreme with it, as the shorts are a statement on their own.Don't wear unflattering shoes as they will stick out like a sore thumb.
