Brotherhood MP denounces passage of Israeli warships through Suez Canal
Published in Daily News Egypt on 17 - 07 - 2009

CAIRO: Muslim Brotherhood MP Saied Khalifa filed an urgent interrogation request to the PA chairperson for Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, regarding the government's authorization of the passage of Israeli warships through the Suez Canal on July 14.
"How can Egyptian authorities allow something like this to happen at a time when Israel proves every day that it violates the Camp David peace treaty [between Israel and Egypt], Khalifa said. "How can this treaty even continue to exist in the first place after all the violations Israel commits every day.
Aboul Gheit had officially defended the government's position in a statement emphasizing the fact that Egypt's peace treaty with Israel allows the Jewish state to use the canal, which Khalifa rejected.
"How can Aboul Ghiet say that when Israel is destroying Egyptian homes in Egyptian Rafah and continues to kill innocent civilians in Egypt and Palestine?
According to the British Times newspaper on Thursday, the two warships are part of Israel's military preparations for a possible confrontation with Iran.
Independent and Muslim Brotherhood MPs have repeatedly objected to public displays of Egyptian-Israeli cooperation.
During the last parliamentary session, some MPs spearheaded a campaign against Egypt's export of gas to Israel. However, a PA majority affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Party, voted against a ban on the gas exports.
