NEW DELHI: India police have reported that at least 46 people have been killed, including 17 children, in a building collapse in an area just north of central Mumbai. According to reports on Friday, the illegal building caved in late Thursday night, leaving residents dead. Police and rescue workers were combing the debris on Friday hoping to discover any survivors. Another 70 people have been injured in the incident, according to another police official, Vinod Parab. Rescuers are still searching through the wreckage, Jangale said, and five children are among those pulled alive from the rubble so far Friday. Manoj Gohad, a senior local official, told IBN that people were illegally occupying the first four floors of the building even though it hadn't been completed or authorized. With poverty continuing to be a major problem, squatters in buildings such as this are not uncommon, and despite government efforts to remove people, they continue to make their way into livable structures without the government's knowledge.
