Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 09 - 06 - 2005

Twelve people, including three children, were killed and 20 injured when a building collapsed in the Alexandria district of Mahattet Al-Raml on Tuesday, reports Reem Nafie
As the Weekly went to press the death toll continued to rise while rescue teams continued their search for survivors. Ten people are believed to be trapped under the rubble. Police at the site said that 14 of those injured are being treated in hospital.
Among the survivors was a seven-year-old boy who was found under the rubble on Wednesday. Sources at the site say that a senior Egyptian intelligence official, who was visiting relatives in the building, might still be under the wreckage.
The six-storey building is said to have originally been three storeys tall before the building's owner added three extra floors in violation of building codes.
The collapse brought down part of the wall of an adjacent primary school but no one was hurt.
