CAPE TOWN: Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba has made a clarion call to all Namibians to work with law-enforcement agencies in the combating of crime in the country. Speaking on Thursday during the opening of the Fifth Swapo-Party Congress underway in Windhoek, Pohamba said he was especially concerned about crime committed against women, children and other vulnerable members of the society. He was referring to the increase in crimes committed in the name of passion, with men often being the perpetrators. A fired-up Pohamba reiterated his appeal to men to stop killing their partners, while imploring women to desist from the practice of baby dumping. He said there are other ways of dealing with unwanted babies, such as giving such babies to welfare organizations. “If you do not want the baby you are carrying, at least wait until you give birth then you can give that baby to the State. The State will take care of such baby. Don't kill an innocent life by dumping it,” said Pohamba. The Head of State said it was disheartening to see men commit such heinous crimes against their partners who also happen to be a wife, a sister or a mother. “How does one kill a person they have been staying with just like that? It must stop, and it must end today. It is totally unacceptable,” Pohamba noted. He said the Namibian government is committed to the maintenance of peace, security and the rule of law, therefore such acts cannot be allowed to continue. Pohamba was addressing close to 600 party members who have converged in Windhoek for the Swapo Party's four-day ordinary congress. Being the highest decision-making body according to Swapo structures, the congress is expected to discuss and adopt policies that will guide party activities for the next five years.
