KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia wants a Declaration of Solidarity for Palestine to be recommended by foreign ministers at the two-day Extraordinary Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Committee on Palestine in Ramallah beginning on Sunday. The country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Foreign Minister Anifah Aman was leading the Malaysian delegation to the meeting, accompanied by senior ministry officials. “Malaysia's participation at the extraordinary meeting demonstrates the nation's continued support for the government and people of Palestine,” Wisma Putra said, adding that Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas would also attend the meeting. The extraordinary meeting was being held to show the support and solidarity of the NAM member countries toward Palestine as well as to study and evaluate the current situation in Palestine, including the rise in illegal settlements and the violation of the rights of the Palestinian people by Israel. The NAM Committee on Palestine consists of 13 countries namely South Africa, Algeria, Bangladesh, Colombia, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Palestine, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Extraordinary Ministerial Meeting of the NAM Committee on Palestine is being held following the proposal made by Palestine's Foreign Minister Riad Al-Malki during the NAM Ministerial Level Committee Meeting on Palestine on May 9 in conjunction with the Ministerial Level Meeting of the NAM Coordination Bureau held at Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from May 7 to 10.
