CAIRO: Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr held intensive talks on Wednesday, with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi on means of promoting economic and trade cooperation and increasing Chinese investments in Egypt. The talks underlined strategic cooperation and continued historical relations particularly at the popular level. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Amr Rushdi said that Egypt is looking forward to attracting more Chinese investments. Chinese investments in Egypt do not match the excellent level of political relations, he added. “China is well aware of Egypt's great potential,” he said, voicing hope that cooperation between the foreign ministries in both countries overcomes obstacles and administrative procedures would be hammered out. Amr also spoke about potentials of cooperation between Egypt and China in the field of establishing railways of bullet trains and renewable energy, Rushdi said. The minister expounded Egypt's potentials in the fields of exploration of minerals in Sinai and elsewhere in the country and oil and natural gas prospecting in the Mediterranean Sea, he added. The Chinese foreign minister asserted his country's support for the Egyptian people at this transitional phase and its appreciation of the achievements reached so far in terms of the parliamentary elections and the start of the presidential elections, Rushdi said. The Chinese companies have not withdrawn from the Egyptian market last year but in fact new investments were pumped into Egypt worth $ 80 million this year, which reflects China's support for Egypt under all circumstances, he concluded.
