Singapore to refurbish budget airport terminal

Singapore (dpa) – Singapore is to knock down and rebuild the budget terminal at its main airport in response to soaring demand from price-conscious travelers, a news report said Thursday.
The annual number of passengers at the terminal has risen from 2.7 million when it opened in 2006 to reach maximum capacity at 7 million, more than a quarter of the total at Changi Airport.
The current terminal building will close in September, The Straits Times reported, citing anonymous industry sources.
Low-cost airlines currently using it will be accommodated in the main terminals while the new budget facilities are built.
The budget travel sector has grown faster than expected, from just 5.6 percent to 25.6 percent of all passenger traffic at Changi Airport between 2005 and last year.
