Manila (dpa) – Philippine security forces have recovered a homemade bomb in an airport that serves as the gateway to the country's most popular tourist destination, police said Wednesday. The device was found inside a plastic pouch in the cargo area of the Kalibo International Airport in Aklan province, 360 kilometers south of Manila, on Tuesday evening. Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz said airport police quickly removed the bomb from the airport and safely detonated it. He said the pouch was apparently dropped off at the airport for delivery to an address in the southern Philippines, where Muslim militants with suspected links to terrorist groups operate. Kalibo is the main gateway to Boracay Island, a favorite destination for foreign and local tourists that is famous for its white-sand beaches.
