Manila (dpa) – Three people were killed and 12 injured when suspected Muslim rebels attacked a jail in the southern Philippines, allegedly in a bid to rescue a detained comrade, the military said Monday. About 50 suspects descended on the jail in Kidapawan City, 930 kilometers south of Manila, late Sunday and detonated two bombs, said Colonel Leopoldo Galon, a regional military spokesman. The attackers also fired a rocket-propelled grenade into the jail's main gate, Galon said. “The attackers were, however, repulsed by the jail guards, foiling their attempt to rescue Lastikman,” he said, referring to the alias of detained Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebel Datukan Samad. Four jail officers were injured in the attack. As the suspects withdrew, they opened fire at villagers and set off another bomb at a nearby karaoke bar. One civilian was shot dead, two were killed by the blast, and eight others were injured. The MILF is the largest Muslim rebel group fighting for an independent Islamic state in the southern Philippines. Samad is facing charges of kidnapping, murder, robbery and firearms theft. He was captured in October. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/VqPPz Tags: Attack, Jail, MILF, Philippines Section: East Asia, Latest News
