CAIRO: Egypt's liberal Free Egyptians Party issued a statement on Wednesday calling on the Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), to reveal their intentions concerning the presidential race and their preferred candidate, warning of “setting up the political and constitutional situation in Egypt that paves the way to the domination of the Muslim Brotherhood over power in Egypt unchallenged for a long time.” Ahmed Saeed, the head of the party, said that the “Muslim Brotherhood is currently satisfied with its domination over the People`s Assembly and the Shura Council, and the monopoly of nearly 99 percent of the political arena.” He added that the Islamic group “has not yet disclosed its intentions either to nominate a candidate or not and maintains secrecy over its preferred candidate.” He warned of the possibility of plans by the Muslim Brotherhood to “turn the republican system in Parliament, during the constitution drafting, so that Egypt becomes a parliamentary republic, and they can form the government alone, therefore the position of the president is not important to the group, as the next president would be without power.” Nominations for Egypt's presidential elections are to open on March 10, with a vote scheduled for June. The Brotherhood and its political party have repeatedly said they would not field a candidate, but worries abound over whether they will support a candidate ahead of the vote.
