CAIRO: Egypt's Silent Majority Movement, known for its wide support of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and rejection of protests and sit-ins, issued a statement on Saturday calling on the People`s Assembly to withdraw confidence from the minister of interior. The movement called on the members of the parliament to “bear their responsibility in this critical time,” referring to the incidents of Port Said that left 75 dead and hundreds injured following a football match in the city. It said in a statement that the parliament “must withdraw confidence from the Minister of Interior, Major General Mohammed Ibrahim, in the case of proven negligence, and to nominate another to succeed him, to be responsible for purging the ministry fully from remnants of the former regime.” The movement called on parliament to speed the formation of the constitutional assembly to draft a news constitution as soon as possible, “so that it helps the SCAF transferring power to an elected president and parliament, and to finally have a constitution that reflects the will of the Egyptian People.” It is the first such statement calling for the removal of a governmental official from the group, which has been stalwart in its support for the military junta. The statement, activists told Bikyamasr.com, was a sign that public opinion toward governmental institutions and the military are changing. “I think what we are seeing is a turn toward more and more people supporting our cause,” Ahmed, a 41-year-old carpenter from Aswan, told Bikyamasr.com as a ceasefire held for a few hours on Saturday in downtown Cairo.
