DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates has inaugurated the country's first Sikh gurdwara, media reports said on Saturday. The Sikh community said it was an example of the strength of the community and their role in UAE society. The gurdwara opened Friday in Jebel Ali, around 35 km from Dubai, Gulf News reported. Spread over 25,000 square feet near the Jebel Ali Hospital, the gurdwara has a dedicated floor for community feasts and a huge hall for devotional songs. The Sikh community in Dubai had been offering in an unofficial gurdwara in the temple complex in Bur Dubai. There are an estimated 50,000 Sikhs in the UAE, mainly from India and Pakistan. According to the sikhsindubai.com website, the Sikh community are mainly “employed in almost all types of occupations ranging from Doctors, Engineers, Accountants, Administrators, Salesmen, Drivers.” The community had long sought a new refuge for prayers and it appears they will have a location for the coming years.
