DUBAI: In a move being hailed by conservationists across the region, United Arab Emirates newspaper The National announced this week it was moving to printing on 100 percent recycled paper. Recycling and reducing the UAE's carbon footprint has become a leading issue in the massive metropolitan areas of the country, notably in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. According to international statistics, residents in the Emirates generate one of the largest per-capita numbers of waste and have a high carbon output. This, doubled with an overall lack of recycling infrastructure, has left the country as one of the leaders for climate change emissions. The National, based in Abu Dhabi, hopes that through their initial efforts – which include importing the recylced paper into the country for printing – the country will begin to take recycling seriously. In their article detailing their new initiative, the paper said the Abu Dhabi Center for Waste Management hopes to have the necessary facilities “within a year or so.” The goal, The National said, is to increase demand for recylced paper products over the near future with the goal of sourcing its paper locally in the coming years.
