Paris (dpa) – The French manufacturer of the suspect breast implants that have been recalled in several countries was arrested Thursday on suspicion of involuntary homicide and harm, France Info radio reported. Jean-Claude Mas, founder of Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), was arrested at his home in the southern Var region, the report said. PIP implants are at the center of an international health scare. In 2010, the company was discovered to have been using an industrial-grade silicone gel in the implants to lower costs. The implants were banned and PIP was placed under liquidation. Health authorities in France, which has around 30,000 PIP users, say they present unacceptably high rates of rupture and can cause inflammation. France, Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic have all advised women with the implants to have them removed as a preventive measure. Around 400,000 PIP implants were sold worldwide, mainly in Western Europe and Latin America. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/C6XOH Tags: France, Implants, PIP Section: Health
