Amsterdam (dpa) – The 1,400 Dutch woman with breast implants made by scandal-tainted French firm PIP should have them removed “as a preventive measure,” Dutch Health ministry inspectors advised Wednesday. Health Minister Edith Schippers had initially said that women “should have their PIP implants checked,” but Health Ministry inspectors and the country's plastic surgeons' association (NVPC) urged them to have them removed. France banned the breast PIP implants, found to be made with industrial silicone, in 2010. The French Health Ministry recommended that the 30,000 women who received the faulty PIP brand of breast implants be offered surgery to have them removed as a preventive measure. French, German, Czech and Dutch authorities have recommended the removal of PIP implants. Australian authorities are sticking with their British counterparts, who insist PIP rupture rates are the same as for other implants.
