CAIRO: Amr Moussa, former Secretary General of the Arab League and Egyptian presidential hopeful, said that the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) is not accused of any crime, and that there is no need to arrange a “safe exit” from power. His statements came after reports were circulated about a deal between the SCAF and Muslim Brotherhood for a safe exit, without holding the junta accountable for violations committed during their rule since former President Hosni Mubarak's ouster last February. Moussa added, ” these reports imply a kind of accusation and incitement, they talk about a safe exit as if the SCAF is accused of a crime. For me, the military council should end their rule on June 30. “ “I do not think that the Council is charged with a crime,” he said. “The SCAF was criticized for its management of the state, some of which is true, for slow decision-making or hesitation in the decision or mistakes, but to say that the Council has committed crimes and offenses, and that in turn it must seek a safe exit from power with immunity, leads to confusion,” he assed. He continued: “we better discuss the security role of the armed forces after the transition of power, in the context of defining the functions of the key institutions of the state, which would be included in the constitution. About his vision for the army's role and participation in the management of the affairs of the state, he said, “the army's main role is to protect the country, secondly, it must therefore be able to play this role efficiently.” “The army is one of the state institutions and not a parallel state, and must act as such,” he concluded.
