CAIRO: More than 22.4 million liters of gasoline were purchased in Egypt on Monday, with 11 million liters pumped in Cairo alone. Congestion and confusion at fueling stations across the country has intensified amid rumors of fuel shortages in Egypt. Hani Dahi, the Executive Chief of the General Authority of Petroleum, told the state-owned MENA news agency that the authority has worked around the clock to provide gasoline to local sources. Dahi stressed that the Authority has no intention to increase gasoline prices, despite worries that the state may not be able to sustain its $21 billion in annual consumer fuel prices. “The campaigns are going on to supervise the work of fuel stations, to oversee the supplying of vehicles with fuel in cooperation with the Ministry of Supplies to make sure that the stations provide gasoline to the citizens and not to manipulate its share,” he explained, pointing to the availability of gasoline in large quantities, as consumption shot up 33 percent. He called on citizens to only purchase gasoline based on need and to stop any hoarding of the fuel, as the gasoline will remain available. He also stressed that the private sector owns the majority of the fueling stations in the state. Of 2,840 fueling stations, only 420 are owned by the oil sector.
