CAIRO: Parties in Egypt's newly elected parliament are backing Saad el-Katatni for nomination as the new parliament speaker. El-Katatni, the secretary-general of the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), would be the first Islamist speak of parliament in Egypt's history. His nomination was announced at a press conference at the party headquarters on Monday. Egypt's parliament, the lower house of which is set to adjourn on January 23, has been tasked with forming a 100-person constitutional committee, charged with drafting the nation's next constitution. The Freedom and Justice Party, from which El-Katani's Freedom and Justice Party won the single largest share of seats in the upcoming parliament, with more than 45 percent of seats. They were followed in second by the more conservative, Salafi al-Nour Party, which now controls 25 percent of seats.
