CAIRO: Egyptians in nine governates cast their ballots on Wednesday in the final day of polling to elect Egypt's lower house of parliament, the People's Assembly. The parliamentary elections started on November 28 and took place in three regional stages. Another of voting for Egypt's upper house of parliament will begin on January 29 and will also take place in three regional stages, ending on February 22. Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won the largest share of seats in the lower house elections, taking nearly 35 percent of the vote. They were followed in a close second by the more conservative, Salafi al-Nour Party, with Islamists securing a combined 60 percent of seats in the parliament. The first session of parliament will adjourn on January 23. The newly elected parliament is tasked with drafting the nation's first post-Mubarak constitution, which will then go to a national referendum vote for approval.
