Berlin (dpa) – Germany urged its nationals Friday to leave Syria, warning it would soon only be possible to give them consular assistance with difficulty. Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said the warning was prompted by worsening security in Syria, where thousands have died as security forces crack down on protests. “One has to … assume that the functions of the German embassy will be further reduced,” he said. Diplomatic sources went further, saying Germany would be closing the legal and consular department of the mission in the next few days. Germany has reduced the embassy staffing over recent weeks.
