Berlin (dpa) – A Syrian opposition activist who says he was beaten in Berlin by agents of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad called on Wednesday on the German Foreign Ministry to condemn the incident. “That would serve to protect other opposition activists here in Germany,” Ferhad Ahma told dpa in an interview. Ahma is an activist with both the German Green Party and the opposition Syrian National Council. He said two men who attacked him in his apartment on Monday appeared to be Syrian government agents. Berlin police say they are still investigating and the Foreign Ministry says it is waiting for the findings. “It has to be clear that such acts cannot be tolerated in this country,” said Ahma. Green Party lawmaker Volker Beck demanded that the Syrian ambassador in Berlin be summoned to the Foreign Ministry and handed a protest over the incident. On his Facebook page, Beck demanded police protection for Ahma. The Foreign Ministry in Berlin said on Tuesday it was “aware of the attack and the corresponding allegations directed at Syria” and was in close contact with investigators.
