Syrian activists to rally against Arab League as violence continues
Published in Bikya Masr on 23 - 12 - 2011

Beirut (dpa) – Syrian activists called on Friday for rallies against an Arab League observer mission which arrived in Syria to end the bloodbath, as violence continued in the restive provinces in central and northwestern Syria, killing six people overnight.
Using the slogan “Protocol of death, a license to kill,” activists called on Facebook for nationwide protests against the mission following Friday prayers.
“Nothing will stop the killing machine of this regime unless this crisis is referred to the United Nations Security Council,” a Syrian activist based in Beirut told dpa.
Opposition leaders have described Syria's agreement to the mission as a “new manoeuvre” to prevent the Arab League from taking the Syrian crisis to the UN Security Council.
An Arab League advance team arrived in Syria Thursday to oversee a plan to end ten months of uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which has killed more than 5,000 people according to United Nations estimates.
Despite the arrival of the advance team, activists said clashes between defectors and troops in the flashpoints of Homs and Idlib continued overnight, killing at least six people.
“Five people from the same family were killed in Idlib,” Ahmed Abdallah, an activist from the city, told dpa by phone.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released a video showing 49 bodies of men that it claimed had been killed in Idlib by the Syrian regime on Tuesday.
State news agency SANA said Thursday that more than 2,000 members of the security forces had been killed since anti-government protests erupted in March.
The intensified violence prompted the German foreign ministry in Berlin to summon Syria's ambassador and demand an immediate halt to the “brutal” repression of pro-democracy demonstrators. dpa
