Islamabad (dpa) – Three Iranian border guards held in Pakistan for killing a civilian face murder charges after a meeting about their fate between officials of the two countries failed to achieve an agreement, police said on Wednesday. The guards were arrested on Saturday in the Mashkehl area of Washak district in south-western Baluchistan province after they entered Pakistan and shot dead a youth and injured another. “The three Iranians are with our security forces and we will soon bring them to the local court to start their formal trial for murder,” said Abdul Malik, head of the local police station. He said the victim's family had lodged a complaint against the Iranians and police were investigating. Iran has asked Pakistan to release the three immediately, saying the men had crossed the border unintentionally while chasing smugglers who tried to cross the border. A meeting held between senior officials of the two sides on Tuesday failed as Pakistan refused to release the three. Pakistan and Iran share a thinly guarded 800-kilometre long border across which goods and people bound for Europe are routinely smuggled.
