CAIRO: The volume of remittances by Egyptians abroad during last year reached $12 billion, an increase of more than $3 billion from the previous year, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Faiza Aboul Naga announced on Tuesday. Her statements came during a press conference, as the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation was also announcing the results of the meeting of the economic cabinet. Aboul Naga added that the budget deficit reached 134 billion Egyptian pounds. She explained that the percentage of external debt is still in the “safe zone” and represents 14.5 percent of the gross national product. In a different context, the Suez Canal achieved its biggest daily revenue in its history on Monday, as it amounted to $18.9 million, with some 71 ships passing through the canal with a total tonnage of over three million tons.
