CAIRO: The United States Embassy in Egypt has denied reports that said Washington was urging Arab countries to end financial assistance to Egypt. The embassy, in a statement on Tuesday said there was “no truth” to previous reports that said the American administration was pushing Arab nations to end funding Egypt's military junta. “There is no truth to press reports alleging that the U.S. has asked Arab countries to refrain from providing financial assistance to Egypt,” a press statement from the embassy said. “To the contrary, we are continuing to engage other international partners to look for ways to support Egypt during this transitional period,” it added. Over the past few days, a number of reports have claimed Washington was pushing its Arab allies to end funding for the military government of Egypt after it had violently cracked down on protesters in the country over the past few months. Egyptian activists have continued to demand the United States end its support of the military junta in the country. The calls became more forceful following the late November clashes in downtown Cairo, where American-made tear gas was used against protesters in large amounts. The US said after the violence, which medical sources told Bikyamasr.com left over 70 people dead, that Egyptian police did not use tear gas against accepted norms, despite evidence and eye witness accounts that police had fired tear gas directly into field hospitals.
