Sarstedt, Germany (dpa) – Two gunmen shot dead a 35-year-old Syrian man near the German city of Hanover, police said Monday. A German acquaintance claimed the victim, an applicant for political asylum, had been in fear for his life since an alleged affair with a married woman. The family of the woman's husband had allegedly been looking for the Syrian man. “He was in fear. He had been on the run since mid-2010,” said Uwe Wedekind, chief of a group that helps refugees in Hildesheim city. Wedekind said he had known the victim for 10 years and last saw him six weeks ago. “He couldn't go on any more. He had no energy left to escape.” Police declined to give any other identifying information about the victim, who was shot Sunday in his car when it stopped at a red light in Sarstedt, on the southern outskirts of Hanover. “We have no evidence whatever to suggest a xenophobic or politically motivated attack,” said senior prosecutor Bernd Seemann. Witnesses said that two gunmen walked up to the car and began firing through side windows before running away.. Police said the victim lived in nearby Hildesheim, but was a frequent visitor to Sarstedt. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/WCfYa Tags: Germany, Shooting Section: Europe, Latest News, Syria
