CAIRO: A top Libyan militia leader warned Egypt on Saturday that there could be force used to close Egypt's embassy in Libya and close the border if Cairo did not end the transmission of Muammar Gaddafi-era state television broadcasts that show old footage of his speeches from Egypt. The commander of Tripoli's Revolutionist Council Abdullah Nakar called on Egypt's state-run Nilesat satellite to end the transmission of former dictator Gaddafi's speeches from the al-Gamahiriya station. The speeches call on Libyans to take arms against the “invaders” of the country, in reference to the rebels who ousted Gaddafi and killed him late last year. Although the station was not broadcasting on Saturday, residents in Tripoli claimed to have watched the channel and the speeches on Friday. Naker said the channel was funded by businessmen loyal to the leader and began broadcasting again last week. “The broadcast of the channel (Al Jamahiriya) should be stopped immediately,” Naker told a news conference at his base in the headquarters of a state-owned construction company on the outskirts of Tripoli. “We will take all measures, including the closing of the border, expelling Egyptians and closing down the Egyptian embassy and consulate.” A Nilesat official said the state-run station's broadcasts had been cut off for several months.
