CAIRO: The Arab Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) has released a statement condemning the ongoing targeting of Syrian intellectuals, artists and media professionals. ANHRI expressed a “concern over the grave situation of freedom of opinion and expression that declines daily under the ongoing dictator's regime, which uses all its repressive tools against them.” The ANHRI statement cites the detention of several Syrian intellectuals and media professionals, including the recent arrest of photographer and film producer Guevara Nemer, who was detained by authorities on her way to the Dubai Film Festival on December 8. ANHRI called her detention, and the detention of other Syrian intellectuals like her, including the high-profile case of Syrian-American blogger Razan Ghazzawi, a “part of an organized campaign by the illegitimate regime authorities against bloggers, media professionals, opinion makers, and the mass media.” “The ongoing repression of freedoms by the authorities is a clear violation to freedom of opinion and expression that under such an illegitimate regime that uses all the means of oppression against the popular uprising against dictatorship and corruption,” said ANHRI in the statement. “Media professionals, creative people, and opinion makers are exposed to all kinds of procedures to gag their mouths and to stop them from supporting the popular uprising. However, all their attempts are in vain. These artists are still completely supportive.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/oBy77 Section: Human Rights, Latest News, Media, Syria
