CAIRO: Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has issued an official apology on Thursday morning for the death of those killed in ongoing clashes in Tahrir Square between state security and anti-military demonstrators. “SCAF is extremely sorry for the fallen martyrs of the children of Egypt in the latest incidents in Tahrir Square,” reads the statement from the interim military council, issued on their official Facebook page. “SCAF presents its condolences to the families of martyrs throughout Egypt.” The apology comes after protesters and state security reached a truce, which has been maintained from the early hours of Thursday morning, into the afternoon. The SCAF went on to promise an investigation into the violence that has plagued the square for the last five days, vowing to persecute those responsible. It also pledged to set up a field hospital in the square to aid in assisting injured protesters. According to official estimates, 36 people have died in the battles between the state and demonstrators, and over 3,000 have been wounded. Protesters continue to occupy cities across Egypt, demanding the immediate removal of the interim ruling military council. BM
