CAIRO: Crowds of both pro- and anti-Mubarak gathered outside the police academy courthouse on the outskirts of Cairo where the trial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is being continued. Riot police were tasked with separating the different groups in the wake of clashes between both groups. The Mubarak trial was originally televised, but the judge decided to ban the coverage of the trial. Mubarak is facing charges for the murder of protesters during the revolution that saw his government ousted from power after three decades. The situation outside the trial was tense, with different sides chanting for Mubarak's release or the sentence to be carried out. Four police officers are expected to testify against Mubarak, one of which is a high ranking officer who was in charge of communications, Hussein Saeed Mohamed Mursi, according to the government newspaper Al-Ahram. One witness at the scene told Bikyamasr.com that holding Mubarak on trial is not enough. “We have already let a few ex-ministers go who were some of the most corrupt people in power. It is not enough to simply put Mubarak on trial. Everyone involved must be held accountable,” the witness said. Mubarak is being held on trial along with his two sons Gamal and Alaa, along with former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, who is also accused of giving the order to kill protesters during the revolution. All defendants have denied the charges. BM
