Animals headlines from the world

Pamela Anderson pushing Israel on animal rights
Pamela Anderson, an honorary director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is in Israel to participate in the local version of “Dancing with the Stars.”
Her work for animals “has been really inspiring,” she said. “I feel like I have actually done something.”
An anti-fur bill has been put on hold in Israel over concerns by ultra-Orthodox leaders that it could impact production of the characteristic fur hats worn by some men from Hassidic sects on holidays and other festive occasions.
UK: ‘Dog meat' stall aims to raise awareness of animal cruelty
SHOPPERS in Plymouth were given an unusual choice of food when an animal rights campaigner set up a ‘dog meat' stall in the city center.
The stall appeared to be offering Labrador steaks, dachshund sausages and beagle chops, but in fact it a vegan meat substitute and was part of an Animal Aid campaign against rearing animals for food.
Campaigner Andrew Butler, who manned the stall, said: “Most people eat different parts of various animals every day, without thinking too deeply about what those animals' last moments were like.”
Essex County Opens Deer Hunt To Ease Overcrowding
Sharpshooters are ready to take aim at deer for Essex County's fourth deer hunt, but some residents and animal rights activists are outraged.
Sharpshooters perched in trees will hunt deer at three county reservations, including South Mountain, which is right behind Frances Holland's house in West Orange.
She said the reason she moved there was to be near nature and to watch deer.
“There are virtually no deer left,” Holland said. “I think I've seen, over the past year, two deer.”
Kentucky Couple Pleads Guilty In Animal Cruelty Case
A Rowan County couple charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty pleaded guilty in the case Wednesday.
James and Luevern Fultz both entered into a plea agreement in Rowan County District Court. Investigators say they found more than a dozen dogs in the couple's home in September, many sick, starving, and in living in filthy conditions.
James Fultz told LEX 18 on Tuesday that he could not afford a vet, but tried the best he could to take care of his animals. One of his dogs died shortly after it was rescued, and animal rights activists have pushed ever since for justice in this case.
N.C. Dog Breeders Wary of Missouri Referendum
Animal rights activists may have lost a two-year battle earlier this year to pass “puppy mill” legislation in North Carolina, but the war isn't over.
North Carolina farmers and commercial dog breeders are casting a wary eye toward a referendum on Missouri's November ballot: Proposition B, the “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.” Opponents see the ballot measure — which won with 51.6 percent of the vote Nov. 2 — as an avenue for animal rights groups in other states to regulate a lot more than commercial dog breeding operations.
