Digital economy industry in Egypt accounts for around 4 percent of its GDP, yet it is expected that the digital economy will contribute with 8 percent in its GDP within the upcoming years, former Communications Minister Atef Helmy said. He made those comments on the sidelines of first Arab Digital Economy Conference in Abu Dhabi, today under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces. He added that the percentage of companies depending on the digital economy in Egypt mounted to 7 percent compared to 18 percent and 15 percent in UAE and Saudi Arabia respectively. on the other hand, he asserted the state keenness on applying the digital economy through establishing the supreme council of digital society and the National Council for Payments.
