Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty has urged the European Union to take concrete measures to pressure Israel to halt its military campaign in Gaza, warning that the humanitarian situation had deteriorated to "famine levels." In a phone call on Tuesday with his Spanish counterpart José Manuel Albares, Minister Abdel-Atty said Israeli actions had "exceeded all limits" and demanded a stronger EU response. The discussion comes ahead of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Denmark later this month, where Gaza is expected to dominate the agenda. Albares said he sought Egypt's perspective before the meeting, underlining Cairo's central role as mediator in ceasefire negotiations. Minister Abdel-Atty outlined the latest US-backed proposal, which envisages a 60-day truce, the release of hostages and detainees, and humanitarian access, while longer-term negotiations seek to end the war. The call also touched on bilateral ties, with both ministers hailing the recent upgrade of relations to a "strategic partnership" following Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's visit to Madrid in February.
