Egypt welcomed fresh international efforts to end the war in Ukraine, including the US-Russia summit in Alaska on Aug 15, while also pressing for an urgent ceasefire deal in Gaza. In a statement on Wednesday, the foreign ministry praised the role of US President Donald Trump in pushing forward peace initiatives, citing his meetings with the Ukrainian president and European leaders in Washington on Aug 18. The moves align with Egypt's long-held position that the crisis can only be resolved through "serious negotiations, political will and adherence to international law," not military means. Egypt also expressed hope the talks would bring a swift end to the conflict, which it said has had "grave humanitarian and economic repercussions," especially on developing nations struggling with food security. Turning to the Middle East, Egypt called on Israel to accept a US.-brokered proposal endorsed by Hamas to halt fighting in Gaza, allow humanitarian aid to flow, and secure the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Cairo said such a step would help revive the peace process based on a two-state solution. Egypt reaffirmed its readiness to work with the United States and other partners "to promote peace and stability at both regional and global levels," the ministry added.
