State-owned Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Co. (Ethydco) achieved its 2024 production target, turning out 314,000 tons of ethylene and 330,000 tons of polyethylene, while expanding exports to 35 markets, according to figures presented at the company's general assembly. The meeting, attended by Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy, reviewed Ethydco's performance, which included 7.9 billion Egyptian pounds in domestic sales and $211 million in exports. Sales to Latin America rose 130 per cent year-on-year, while Europe and Turkey remained key export destinations. Ethydco said it had developed a new polyethylene product for coating steel pipes to prevent corrosion and secured German SKZ certification for its polyethylene products, enabling their use in national water, gas and sewage projects. The company also became the first in Egypt to obtain international certification for the carbon footprint of its medium-density polyethylene products, underscoring its environmental commitments. Ethydco is preparing to install a 500-kilowatt solar power station to support its sustainability drive. Minister Badawy told the meeting petrochemicals were a cornerstone for both daily life and the economy, highlighting the sector's role in boosting exports, replacing imports and supplying industries with critical inputs. He urged continued focus on innovation and technology to strengthen competitiveness abroad. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English
