Egypt reclaimed 610,800 feddans of land in fiscal year 2023/24, a 46.6 per cent increase from the previous year, driven largely by the expansion of the government's 1.5 Million Feddan Project, the state statistics agency CAPMAS said Thursday. The desert reclamation initiative accounted for 381,800 feddans, or 62.5 per cent of total reclaimed land, according to the CAPMAS report. National service projects followed with 124,200 feddans, while the private sector contributed 94,100 feddans. Cooperative societies reclaimed 9,100 feddans, and the General Authority for Rehabilitation Projects and Agricultural Development added 1,600 feddans. Under the flagship project, the cultivated area reached 438,400 feddans in 2023/24, up 40.5 per cent year-on-year. Minya governorate led the national effort with 588,300 feddans reclaimed — nearly 55 per cent of the total — followed by Matrouh (215,000 feddans), New Valley (165,900), Aswan (55,000), and Assiut (50,000). Land allocated for livestock activities, including dairy production and animal fattening, rose 6 per cent to 283 feddans during the same period. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Subediting: Y.Yasser
