The US federal budget posted a $291 billion deficit in July 2025, with total receipts of $338 billion and outlays of $630 billion, according to Treasury Department data released on Wednesday. Individual income taxes brought in $145 billion, followed by $131 billion from social insurance and retirement receipts. Other sources included $28 billion from customs duties, $21 billion from corporate income taxes, $10 billion from excise taxes, $2 billion from miscellaneous receipts, and $2 billion each from estate and gift taxes. On the spending side, Social Security was the largest category at $133 billion, followed by Medicare at $100 billion, net interest at $92 billion, health programmes at $90 billion, national defence at $76 billion, income security at $54 billion, education at $33 billion, veterans' benefits and services at $32 billion, transportation at $13 billion, and other functions at $7 billion.
