Egypt on Monday welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's announcement of his country's intention to recognise the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. Cairo, in a statement carried by its Foreign Ministry's Facebook page, described the move as a historic step that supports the restoration of Palestinian rights and enables the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and establish an independent, contiguous state along the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Foreign Ministry said the landmark decision, along with similar moves by other countries in recent months, represents a pivotal step towards achieving a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. It added that the decision reflects growing international support for the Palestinian people and their just cause, and a rejection of Israeli practices in the occupied territories, including starvation policies and expanded military operations in Gaza, which fuel hatred, extremism and instability in the region. Egypt praised the recent international momentum towards recognising the Palestinian state and urged other countries yet to do so to take this step in support of humanity and justice. It renewed its call on the international community to intensify serious and effective efforts to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and implement the two-state solution, in a way that ends decades of Palestinian suffering and ensures security and stability for all peoples of the region.
