Egypt's IETOS is building a new electromechanical equipment factory in New Alamein City, with production slated to begin later this year, Minister of Housing Sherif El Sherbiny announced on Tuesday. The project forms part of the government's broader strategy to localise the manufacturing of critical components used in water purification, wastewater treatment, and seawater desalination. El Sherbiny said the facility would contribute to advancing Egypt's industrial self-sufficiency and support national infrastructure projects. The announcement came on the sidelines of his visit to DuPont's global research centre in Barcelona, Spain, one of the world's largest specialised hubs for water desalination and treatment technologies, particularly ultrafiltration (UF). The minister met with representatives from both DuPont and Egypt's IETOS to discuss advanced global technologies in drinking water purification, wastewater treatment, and seawater desalination, including membrane-based systems such as UF, nanofiltration (NF), and reverse osmosis (RO). Discussions also addressed challenges facing membrane technology operations, technical solutions to overcome them, and the importance of knowledge transfer and capacity-building through training programmes for technical staff in Egypt's water sector. Both sides explored future cooperation in desalination, energy-efficient technologies, and the reuse of treated wastewater. The talks focused on aligning with Egypt's transition to a green economy through optimal water resource use, expanding desalination facilities, promoting private sector engagement, and boosting local industry with an eye towards export markets in the Gulf and North Africa.
