Indonesia has allocated 2.14 trillion rupiahs (around $130 million) for President Prabowo Subianto's People's School programme this year, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced on Wednesday. The programme's goal was to revolutionise educational equity in Indonesia by providing fully free, full-boarding schools for children from the country's most impoverished families. The minister said that out of the 159 People's Schools scheduled to be up and running by 2025, 63 have already started operating as of July 14, with more than 9,000 students enrolled. The 96 schools still to open will do so gradually: 37 on Aug. 1, and the remaining 59 in early September. The minister also stated that the government planned to boost the program's funding in the 2026 state budget. "This is a real commitment to supporting children from underprivileged families, providing them with the opportunity to learn and grow through quality education, and preparing them for a better future," she said.
